What To Do If Involved In An Accident – Information For Claims

Of course, even the safest drivers may have accidents from time to time, however minor. It is best to be briefed ahead of time to reduce anxiety if an accident should occur. That way, you can avoid unnecessary complications or delays when filing a claim with your NJ car insurance policy and further protect yourself in the process.

Below is a list of actions you should take at the accident scene. These actions should prove helpful when filing a claim on your cheap auto insurance.

At the accident scene:

  • Stop your vehicle and move it to a safe position either on the road or, if possible, off to the shoulder.
  • Once the vehicle is in a safer location, check yourself and any passengers in your car for injuries.
  • No matter how minor the accident may seem, call the police and report it as soon as you are able. If there are injuries, law enforcement will contact medical personnel to arrive on the scene.
  • When law enforcement does arrive, fully cooperate with them. After providing the basic details of the accident, ask them where and/or how you can obtain the accident report. It is also advisable to get the accident case number and badge number of the officer filling out the report on scene, and any medical personnel that is present.
  • Record the names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses of individuals involved in the accident and any witnesses at the scene. Also record the license plate number of other vehicles involved, their makes and models, and insurance information. Be sure to note any damages you see to any vehicle involved in the accident. Also note circumstances or environmental factors such as road and/or weather conditions that may have been a factor in the accident.
